Chris O'Neil, aka "The Web Guy" - Founder of Anza Valley Networks, Inc.
|
An avid computer programmer since the age of 8, and a 14-year veteran of the Internet Service Provider industry, Chris started his Internet career in 1994 with Orange County's first Internet Service Provider (ISP), Pacific Coast Consulting Services. Quickly growing into a nationwide internet franchise corporation called "First Internet Alliance", Chris helped build and manage several ISP's, from San Clemente, to San Diego.
Chris quickly combined his love of computer programming with his hands-on experience working as a network engineer, and in 1995 took on the additional responsibility of leading the "web consulting team" -- and started developing custom web sites and intranets for businesses in Orange, L.A. and San Diego counties.

Taking a break with his 160lb "puppy" |
Since then, Chris has branched out on his own, serving clients worldwide, and logging in over 5,000 hours of custom web programming (LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl).
Along the way Chris earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from San Diego State University, and also served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. Recently, Chris earned his "Certificate of Expertise" in SELinux Policy Administration, and hopes to achieve the Red Hat Certified Security Specialist (RHCSS) certification by the end of 2008.
|
Chris spent the latter half of 2002 and the first half of 2003 in the Middle East supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom as the Communications and Information Systems Officer for 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines.
Shown on the left wearing a chemical protective suit (which the US soldiers and Marines wore during the first few weeks of the Iraq War in anticipation of chemical rocket attacks), is a photo of Chris providing "local security" -- a task that all Marines performed during the invasion, regardless of rank.
|
Chris' personal military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievment Medal with "Combat V", the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Exhausted, but grateful to be alive! This photo of Chris standing in front of a SatCOM link outside Battalion CP was taken in Sadr City, April 2003. 3/1 stayed at this location for several weeks after performing an amphibious assault across the Tigris River. Days were fairly safe -- with the exception of some unlucky Marines who were hit by richochets inside the walled compound.
|
Dusk brought the enemy -- who would attempt to ambush foot patrols and fire down into the compound. 3/1's snipers got a lot of action on these nights, while foot patrols located, closed with and destroyed the enemy teams. When the bullets got close, Chris piled rubble and debris around himself -- as digging a fighting position was impossible inside this compound.

Making the best of a bad situation: Staff Sergeant "Scotsman" McClendon developed a habit of sitting straight up, wide-eyed and angry after being woken up every so often by the snap of a bullet whizzing over his head, before lying back down and going back to sleep for a few more minutes (was he awake ???). This would usually generate a moment of laughter and a few cat-calls from the nearby Marines: "Lay the F*** down, dumb-ass!"

Most memorable moment of the war: We had just conducted the amphib assault across the Tigris River and linked up with the Battalion Main CP at the outskirts of Sadr City. We setup a Battalion-sized perimeter and waited for the rest of the units on our flanks to link up. It was relatively peaceful for a few hours, with the exception of some fellows who drove up and down the street (about a half mile away) every now and then, shooting sporadically. Master Sergeant Don Harrington, aka "Green Mile" - my good friend and second in command dropped by my vehicle to say "hello" and like a pair of boot privates we decided to sit on the hood of the HMMWV and watch the sun set. We started reminiscing about the "good times" (probably in downtown Coronado) when all of a sudden I turned to Don and asked, "Is someone shooting at us?" We both looked at each other for a moment, and then jumped off the hood, and ran behind the vehicle to get some cover. Marines all around us were diving in their fighting holes -- Don and I started laughing at how stupid we had been -- and at Staff Sergeant Mac who like normal was sitting up straight with bullets whizzing by -- when all of a sudden Staff Sergeant Ray aka "Stingray" breathlessly joined us from the rear, where he had been "safely" taking a dump. "Holy CRAP!" he exclaimed -- and went on to recite how a few moments before he had been taking care of business next to another Staff Sergeant, when all of a sudden bullets started dancing around their feet. "SCREW THIS!" exclaimed the other Marine, and without waiting to wipe, pulled up his cami trousers and ran for cover. An extremely proud person, Stingray calmly wiped his ass before pulling up his trousers and rejoining our position. I think we laughed for several minutes after that.
Released from active duty in August 2003, Chris bought a small parcel of land in Aguanga, CA overlooking Lake Riverside - a few miles from the town of Anza, CA.
Chris founded Anza Valley Networks in January of 2005 and incorporated the business in 2008.
Anza Valley Networks, Inc. is a proud member of the Anza Valley Chamber of Commerce and business sponsor of the Hamilton Museum. Chris and his wife Kristie are also active supporters of the Anza Civic Improvement League (ACIL), "Keep Anza Clean" days, and Chris can usually be found marching in the color guard on Anza Day!
Chris is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the VFW National Home for Children and the First Marine Division Association. A service-connected, partially-disabled combat veteran, Chris is also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and is proud to be a "Diamond Leader" in the DAV's "Commanders Club".

A Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and a Certified MySQL 5.0 Developer, Chris stays busy working for his long-term clients and faithfully taking care of his customers.
In his spare time, Chris works outside in a futile attempt to keep his property cleared of brush and weeds, and enjoys reading, watching movies, listening to music, snowboarding, cooking, playing billiards and relaxing with his beautiful wife, Kristie.
A professional member of the IEEE and an "open source" advocate, Chris is currently pursuing professional-level certification with Cisco Systems (CCNP) and Red Hat Linux (RHCA). Chris can be reached by calling toll free 1-866-WEB-GUY-6 (1-866-932-4896).
